08 April 2016: Sam Bashiry, Managing Director and Founder of Broadband Solutions, shared his experience of building a business with local entrepreneurs on Wednesday. Organised by BEC Southern Sydney, the interview and Q&A took place over breakfast at the Waterfront Function Centre in Sans Souci. In attendance were business owners from all over the South Sydney region as well as representatives from numerous small business support groups.
“It was an absolutely fantastic event,” said Katherine Blizard, Business Advisor at BEC Southern Sydney. “Sam has a wealth of knowledge and it was a great opportunity for the passionate small business community of South Sydney to learn from someone who is living the dream. There are many people in the community who want to move away from a standard 9-5 job and people like Sam help give them the inspiration they need to make it happen.”
The event is a part of the BEC’s Entrepreneur speaker series that has in the past seen Crust Pizza founder Costa Anastasiades and Roses Only founder James Stevens speak to local businesses. The breakfast was the fastest selling yet, with tickets sold out over two weeks before the event. The series is proving to be a popular new way for local businesses to network and learn from successful small business owners.
“We start and end each event with networking and introductions. It’s an excellent casual environment that puts like minded people in touch with each other. The South Sydney small business community is strong for it,” said Ms. Blizard.
A range of local supporters were in attendance including Brian Robson, Mayor of the City of Canterbury and Suzie Matthews, Director of Small Business Engagement from the Office of the Small Business Commissioner. Ms. Matthews praised the event and emphasised her organisation’s support for local small businesses: “We want them to startup, we want them to scale up and we want them to innovate.”
Having flown up from Melbourne for the event, Sam was impressed with the enthusiasm, passion and innovation of attendees.
“It was a really energising experience to see so many passionate small business owners in one place. So many of them had great ideas and it was great to be able to share my experience with them. I firmly believe that small businesses are the backbone of our community. Innovation happens on the ground level, by those people looking to disrupt the status quo. This is what business is all about,” said Sam.
“I’ve built my company around supporting small businesses and we’ve designed products, including our SmartPABX cloud phone system, to provide startups with affordable connectivity options. We know how tough it can be to get a business off the ground are committed to supporting Australia’s entrepreneurs.”
